The Dog-Eared Classics
Frank
B.
Edwards and John Bianchi present funny and truly memorable adventure
classics that include a knowing wink at the derring-do tales of a
bygone era and the early 20th-century art of N.C. Wyeth. They do a
stellar job of condensing the text without sacrificing the twists, runs
or flavour of the original narratives. (Of course, they do turn all the
characters into dogs.) These books offer young readers an entertaining
introduction to two classics.
The books are designed as hybrid
picture-book/graphic novels. Each two-page spread is treated as a
chapter and features about 200 words of text and a full-page colour
illustration. They make great read alouds for boys — and girls.

Starting
as a young pup, Robin Hood trains himself to become Sherwood Forest's
best archer. But the day he takes his bow and arrow to the May Day Fair
in Nottingham, bad luck accompanies him. After winning the archery
competition against the evil sheriff's best friend, he is cheated of
his price and declared a criminal. What follows is the doggified
version of the standard tale filled with the likes of Little John and
Friar Tuck. And, of course, the fair Maid Marian.
