Back then, I always sat next to my best friend Sammy, and he and I would laugh together all day at just about everything that happened n the classroom. As I started drawing, Sammy glanced over and noticed what I was doing. His giggles started at once. Encouraged by his appreciation, I strayed from the serious attempt at a portrait of our teacher Mrs. King and went for the laughs I knew would come.

(This amusing anecdote ends predictably, of course, when Mrs. King sees the cartoon portrait and gives it a very bad review.)

Classic Days is a great collector’s item for any John Bianchi fan — and costs less than the four single storybooks that inspired it. It also includes 41 author portraits submitted by his young fans.
