Welcome Back to Pokeweed Public School

The return to class at summer’s end is the most exciting day of the year for the students of Pokeweed Public School. Kids and parents shop for new clothes and school supplies. Old friends reconnect and new friends from faraway places are introduced. Best of all, good old Ms. Mudwortz is at the front door to greet everyone back.

Things are a bit different this year though, because Principal Slugmeyer has installed a brand-new, high-tech computer system that will almost run the school for him. Everything runs perfectly until the computer schedules a fire safety drill.

We all lined up, filed down the hall and headed straight out the front door. The system performed without a flaw… except for the sprinklers that flooded the office.

When it was time for us to head back into the school, we discovered a small problem — the wet computer had locked all the new locks on all the old doors. We were stuck outside!

While Principal Slugmeyer fusses with his new technology, Ms. Mudwortz offers a very low tech solution to the problem by taking the students on an unscheduled field trip to look for signs of autumn. The students do so well that the day ends with a trip to the local ice cream factory.

This visit to Pokeweed School offers young readers a fun glimpse into back-to-school routines.
