Young Authors Day at Pokeweed Public School

Written by John Bianchi
Illustrated by John Bianchi

The climax of every reading week at Pokeweed Public School is a visit by a famous author. But the arrival of adventure writer Reginald Thornbottom becomes extra special when Principal Slugmeyer mistakes the author’s limousine driver for the author. This story is inspired by John Bianchi’s years of experience visiting schools across North America.

“But I’m not Reginald Thornbottom!”

We all gasped.

“I’m Arthur, Mr. Thornbottom’s driver.”

“But… but what happened to Mr. Thornbottom?” asked Principal Slugmeyer. “Is he ill? Did he have an accident? Did he get lost?”

Principal Slugmeyer’s classic case of mistaken identity adds a nice twist to this celebration of reading, writing and sharing stories. It’s just a typical day of joyful confusion at Pokeweed Public School.

As usual, illustrator John Bianchi’s illustrations add a generous dash of humour to a wonderfully warm story that reflects the day to day routine that every young reader will recognize. And along the way, he teachers the students (and his readers) how to write a good story. It’s all about a good idea — and the beginning, the middle and the end.
